Your community offers many resources for collecting a wide variety of no-cost supplies for your program that can used by children in a multitude of ways. The following list of community resources is adapted from the article "Inventing" by Ellen Booth Church which appeared in the March 2006 issue of Early Childhood Today:

  • Restaurant: Large transparent plastic jars, plastic dough buckets

  • Dressmakers: fabric ends, plastic spools

  • Fabric Stores: fabric bolts, outdated pattern books

  • Carpet Stores: rug samples

  • Supermarkets: food posters, large-sized food shipping containers

  • Department stores: broken jewelry, odd scarves, decorative materials

  • Printers/Copy Shops: White and colored papers, copy overruns

  • Offices: Obsolete letterhead, order books, and notebooks

  • Physician and Dentist Offices: Posters stressing healthy activities

  • Bookstores: Posters, bookmarks

  • Travel agencies: posters, outdated brochures

  • Paint/Wallpaper stores: outdated wallpaper books, paint swatches
